Last month the Singapore Computer Society launched a new Chapter targeting the Interactive Digital Media (IDM) industry. Set up to play an active role in the formation of a creative interactive society, the committee (see below) seemed to me extremely energetic and enthusiastic when presenting themselves for the first time in public to the media and potential members at the National Library Singapore.

As the editor of Asian e-Marketing and a member of the Singapore Computer Society (SCS) since the first year I arrived in the Lion City, I support their mission to facilitate research, knowledge sharing, learning and career enhancement for all categories of IT professionals, while simultaneously inspiring and nurturing new entrants into the industry and helping them to integrate into the IT community. On the priority list of the newly established chapter is giving professional support to IDM practitioners by organising events such as symposiums, workshops and forums to enable them to network, get training and upgrade skills.

from left to right: Lee Wee Song Rohit Dadwal, Joe Augustin, Michael Yap, Bill ClaxtonWhoever joined their first panel session that day, a discussion on the “IDM industry and its developments in the next five years?” moderated by Bill Claxton, Technical Director of Iterate Pte Ltd, received an impression of what the Chapter is capable of. The group of panellists, comprising of Michael Yap, Deputy CEO of Media Development Authority; Joe Augustin, The Shareen & Joe Show from MorningJam.com; Rohit Dadwal, Managing Director of Mobile Marketing Association; and Lee Wee Song, Vice President of ST Electronics (Training and Simulation Systems) were lively when it came to sharing and exchanging their thoughts on current developing trends in the interactive digital media industry during the two hour event. Another plus point: The pre- and post event networking opportunities, facilitate linkages among IDM talents, job placement and industry projects by establishing a vibrant community of IDM practitioners.

In cultivating the young talents of Singapore, the Chapter plans to jointly organize animation competitions with the Student Chapters of the Singapore Computer Society, as they believe that the grooming of young IDM potentials is essential for the nourishment and innovation of the industry and is looking forward to attracting both local and regional talents to be members of the Chapter.
