Mobile Monday Singapore (or MoMoS as it is sometimes fondly called) has turned 1 year old and is showing no signs of losing any steam. Chris Chandler, one of the co-founders of MoMoS notes that it is truly a community of mobile professionals and that he and the other founders are very proud of the fact that they have reached people from every aspect of the industry, something which has been achieved much more easily than they thought it would be. MoMoS already has a 1,000 strong mailing list, which is steadily growing. On average 100 people turn up at every session, and they have some very loyal attendees. A challenge the founding members face though is managing MoMoS part-time. “Logistics especially tend to be a struggle at times but the challenges here are workable,” Chandler notes. Looking back, he states wistfully that there are some things that the founders would like to have addressed from the beginning. “I wish we had reached out more to start-ups in the mobile space from the beginning of our sessions,” Chandler states. Elaborating, he notes that start-ups are important because they are very dynamic and bring a lot of new ideas as well as technologies to the table and so on. “We definitely want to work more closely with start-ups and will be kicking off some initiatives to get this going. We want to ensure that MoMoS is a place where start-ups (be they individuals or organizations)can highlight what they are working on, give feedback on their business plans, highlight their points of view about the mobile industry, the challenges they face, and so on. We want to give them the opportunity to mix and brainstorm with others from the industry,” says Chandler. “It is important that they have a greater voice in the industry.” If we need prove as to how eager MoMoS is to achieve this, they will participate on the panel of NUS’ Wireless Venturing Forum which will be held on the 31st of October and 1st of November, 2006. The Global Wireless Venturing Forum will be focusing on wireless ventures and investments, bringing together wireless start-ups, enterprise mobile operators, device & software vendors, as well as mobile venture VCs from around the world for investment, strategic partnership and market/business development opportunities. Since its inception in 2003, more than 40 start-ups have taken part in the investment forums attended by VCs like Allegis Capital, Giza Ventures, Intel Capital, Siemens Mobile Acceleration, Motorola Ventures, Nokia Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures, Walden International, etc. PurpleACE, which has been invested by Siemens Mobile Acceleration, now has footprints across Europe and Asia Pacific while Korea-based Com2Us, which has been invested by Walden International, is now actively expanding into the SEA region. Other things which MoMoS will be looking at include getting more operators involved in MoMoS as well as ensure a broader base of speakers at their sessions. “It’ll be great to have more local companies coming in as speakers,” remarks Chandler thoughtfully. Well, with founding members who are very attuned to the industry and its needs, MoMoS is definitely set to carry on pulling in the crowds. |
